The 54th Statehood Day of Meghalaya was celebrated with solemnity and pride at DC.’s Park, Tura, on Wednesday. The programme was organised by West Garo Hills District Administration, to commemorate the historic occasion of Meghalaya attaining full statehood on January 21st 1972.
The celebration commenced at 12:30 Noon with the programme being compered by Benjamin David Tariang, MCS, Assistant Commissioner, West Garo Hills, followed by the National Anthem. Nipon Hajong, MCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, delivered the welcome address.
A peace prayer was offered by Rev. Dilseng M. Sangma, General Secretary GBC, invoking harmony and unity among the people. This was followed by a Wang–Kimit dance presented by RD Film Production, adding colour and vibrancy to the celebrations.
The history on the formation of Meghalaya State was read out by Smt. Jyostna D. Sangma, Associate Professor, Government College, Tura, highlighting the struggles, aspirations, and collective efforts that led to the creation of the State.
Traditional Garo musical instruments were showcased through a flute/bangsi recital by Bakam Sangma (Nanggo Rere Goserong), followed by Chigring played by Preman D. Sangma. Experience sharing was done by Smt. Bluebell R. Sangma, wife of Late Lt. Masonsingh M. Sangma, recalling memories and contributions towards the State.
A song was presented by Tantani Group, a Garo Folk Fusion Band (MGMP), reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Garo Hills.
Addressing the gathering as Chief Guest, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Vibhor Aggarwal, IAS, extended warm greetings to the people on the occasion of Meghalaya Day. He reflected on Meghalaya’s journey over the past 54 years, highlighting the State’s rich cultural diversity and peaceful coexistence among different tribes and communities as one of its greatest strengths.
The Deputy Commissioner noted that Meghalaya has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies in the country, achieving significant milestones in infrastructure development, service delivery, and regional growth since 1972. While embracing modernisation, he stressed that preserving the State’s diverse cultural heritage must remain a priority. He appreciated the efforts of civil society, artists, and government institutions in safeguarding traditional art, music, and culture, including the use of modern technology for cultural preservation, and referred to national-level recognition received by the State for its cultural richness.
Highlighting the importance of youth empowerment, Aggarwal emphasised mission-mode efforts in capacity building and skill development, in line with the vision of the Chief Minister. He stated that the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society and various government departments are actively implementing initiatives to equip the youth with modern skills, enabling self-sufficiency and economic independence. He urged the younger generation to participate constructively in society and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.
Envisioning a bright future, the Deputy Commissioner expressed confidence that Meghalaya would continue to shine on the national and international map, while remaining rooted in its cultural values, and wished everyone a Happy Meghalaya Day.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Smt. Tadingchi N. Sangma, MCS, Assistant Commissioner, West Garo Hills, followed by the National Anthem.
Similar Statehood Day celebrations were organised across the district with active participation from government officials, students and the public.
