Williamnagar, Jan 12, 2026: Shri Joshua Ch Marak Advocate of Williamnagar Judiciary Court, strongly condemn the brutal killing of an indigenous person at Rajabala, Goalgaon. This shocking and inhuman act of violence is not only an attack on an innocent life, but also a direct assault on the peace, harmony and social fabric of the region. Such incidents cause deep anguish among indigenous communities and raise serious concerns regarding their safety, security and constitutional protection.
Violence against indigenous people is wholly unacceptable in a democratic society governed by the rule of law. The Constitution of India provides specific safeguards for indigenous and tribal communities, recognizing their unique identity, rights and way of life. Any act that undermines these protections must be treated with the utmost seriousness and dealt with firmly under the law, said Marak.
” I urge the State Government and the law enforcement authorities to immediately ensure strict enforcement of law and order throughout the Garo Hills region. There must be no delay, negligence or complacency in addressing this grave situation. The perpetrators responsible for this heinous crime must be identified, apprehended and punished in accordance with law at the earliest, so that justice is not only done but is also seen to be done”.
Furthermore, there should be a thorough and lawful verification of all non-tribal residents in the region, strictly in accordance with existing legal provisions. Strict implementation of Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 must be necessitated in the state to filter the Bangladeshis infiltrators. This process is essential to identify and prevent illegal infiltration, particularly from across international borders, such as Bangladesh, Afghanistan and other neighboring countries, which poses serious threats to internal security, social harmony, and the rights of indigenous inhabitants. Any person found to be illegally residing in the area must be dealt with firmly, transparently, and strictly as per due process of law, without fear or favour, added Marak.
At the same time, “I emphasize that the rule of law must prevail and that all actions taken by the authorities should be within the framework of the Constitution and established legal procedures. Arbitrary action or selective enforcement will only worsen the situation and erode public trust in governance” he added.
The safety, dignity and constitutional rights of indigenous people must be protected at all costs. Indigenous communities should not be made to live in fear in their own land. Failure on the part of the Government and the administration to act decisively and responsibly at this critical juncture will only embolden anti-social elements, encourage further lawlessness, and deepen injustice.
“I call upon the concerned authorities to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and to take all necessary steps to ensure lasting peace, justice, and security in the Garo Hills region” said Marak.
