Tura, Dec 10, 2025:
The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) celebrated International Human Rights Day 2025 with a landmark state-level programme held for the first time in Tura at District Auditorium. The historic shift from the usual venue in Shillong underscored the Commission’s commitment to decentralising awareness and strengthening human rights outreach across Meghalaya. This year’s global theme, “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials,” resonated throughout the event.
The programme was graced by Shri Marcuise N. Marak, Minister of PHE, Housing and Soil & Water Conservation Departments, as the Chief Guest. Dr. Vasanthi Vijayakumar, Vice Chancellor of Captain Williamson Sangma State University, attended as the Guest of Honour. Other dignitaries included L. Ch. Marak, MCS, Secretary of MHRC; H. Nongpluh, IPS (Retd.), Member, MHRC; Baffindalyne Giri, Retired District & Sessions Judge and Member, MHRC; along with officials, students, representatives from various institutions, and members of civil society.
The programme began with a welcome address by L. Ch. Marak, who highlighted the importance of the occasion and the significance of hosting the event in Tura.
Dr. Vasanthi Vijayakumar, in her address, emphasised the universal responsibility of treating every individual with dignity, irrespective of background or beliefs. She spoke about evolving human rights challenges such as poverty, gender inequality, and discrimination, stressing the need for continuous awareness, empathy, and accountability.
Delivering his keynote address, Shri H. Nongpluh, Member of MHRC, reflected on the global significance of December 10th—the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948 and India’s proud contribution to its drafting. He outlined the mandate and functioning of the MHRC since its establishment in 2016, highlighting the Commission’s role in ensuring that government departments uphold constitutional rights and act on the Commission’s recommendations promptly.
Chief Guest Marcuise N. Marak delivered an inspiring message, emphasising that human rights are not abstract ideals but are rooted in everyday interactions. He stressed the importance of public servants conducting their duties with courtesy and respect, acknowledging the crucial role of police and BSF personnel in safeguarding people’s dignity. Drawing from the life of Nelson Mandela, he urged students to cultivate moral courage and stand up for justice.
He further outlined government initiatives aimed at strengthening fundamental rights and improving quality of life, including the CM Elevate Scheme, Focus and Focus+ for economic upliftment, the creation of the Meghalaya Climate Council, and investments in digital learning and educational infrastructure. He concluded by suggesting that Human Rights Day programmes be conducted across all districts of Meghalaya to ensure wider awareness.
The celebration featured a welcome song and vibrant cultural performances by students from Captain Williamson Sangma State University and the Female Health Workers Training School, Rongkhon, adding colour and energy to the event.
The programme ended with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to uphold human dignity, promote equality, and integrate human rights into everyday life across the state.
