GHD News,Tura, Nov 20, 2025:The Cooperation Department, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd. and the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency, today organised the Closing Ceremony of the 72nd All India Cooperative Week Celebration at the L.P. School Ground, Matchakolgre. The programme was held under the national theme “Cooperatives as Vehicles for Atmanirbhar Bharat”, with the day’s topic focusing on “Innovative Cooperative Business Models for Global Competitiveness.”

Shri Thomas A. Sangma, Hon’ble Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, graced the function as the Chief Guest and formally inaugurated the exhibition. In his address, he emphasised the growing importance of cooperatives in India’s economic structure, noting that the country has more than 8.5 lakh cooperative societies with over three crore active members. He highlighted how cooperatives impact various sectors—from agriculture and dairy to banking and food processing—and cited successful models like Amul, which evolved from a small rural cooperative into a brand of global prominence.

The Chief Guest underscored that innovation, professional management, and digital transformation are essential for cooperatives to remain competitive in an increasingly interconnected world. He stressed that adopting modern technology, improving governance, and forming strategic partnerships will enable cooperative societies to strengthen their operations and contribute meaningfully to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting cooperative institutions in Meghalaya and empowering rural communities through sustainable and inclusive cooperative growth.

The programme began with the registration of participants from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, followed by the arrival of the Chief Guest and dignitaries. The Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Meghalaya, Shillong, delivered the welcome address, after which VVIPs, VIPs and other distinguished guests were felicitated. The gathering was entertained with folk songs presented by KATTA NIHA, adding a traditional touch to the event.

Awards were presented to the three best-performing Primary Cooperative Societies at the district level, as well as the three best-performing District/Sub-Division level societies. Shri R.N. Rymbai, DRCS, Meghalaya, offered the vote of thanks, and the first session concluded with light refreshments.

The second session featured an introductory briefing by the Cooperation Department, screening of departmental video clippings, and a presentation on the formation and registration of cooperative societies. This was followed by technical sessions on Financial Inclusion by MCAB, mobilisation initiatives by MBMA, and a presentation on innovative cooperative business models for global competitiveness. The event concluded with an interactive session and a working lunch.

The ceremony marked a successful conclusion to the 72nd All India Cooperative Week celebration, bringing renewed focus to the role of cooperatives in strengthening livelihoods, enhancing economic resilience, and fostering self-reliance across the State.
