Rongara, Sep 11, 2026: The Garo Hills Youth Solidarity (GHYS), Rongara Unit, has submitted four important demands of memorandum to the Chief Minister, urging the State Government to take immediate and meaningful steps on four major issues concerning the people and development of the Rongara and Baghmara region.

The four major demands has submitted by the GHYS Rongara Unit are establishment and opening of an International Border Haat at Rongara to facilitate legitimate cross-border trade and commercial activities between India and Bangladesh. The organisation believes that such a facility would promote economic opportunities, improve the livelihood of local communities and strengthen people-to-people relations between the two neighbouring countries.

The GHYS has also urged the Government to establish a Lokayukta Bench in Garo Hills region, that the people from remote areas can approach the anti-corruption institution without facing the difficulties
and expenses associated with travelling to Shillong.

The organisation has further requested that video-conferencing facilities be established and strengthened between the Garo Hills and the Meghalaya Lokayukta at Shillong, enabling complainants, witnesses and other concerned persons to participate in proceedings remotely, wherever legally permissible.

According to the GHYS, geographical distance should not become an obstacle for ordinary citizens seeking justice in matters involving alleged corruption and mal-administration.

The GHYS Rongara Unit, has demanded the establishment of a Civil Sub-Division at Rongara to make administration more accessible to the people of area.

At present, people are required to travel considerable distances in connection with various administrative matters. The organisation stated that a Civil Sub-Division at Rongara would help to reduce the difficulties faced by the public and improve the delivery of government services, particularly for people travelling between Rongara and Baghmara.

The fourth memorandum concerns the growing need for measures to prevent human-wildlife conflict along the Rongara-Baghmara highway.

The GHYS has urged the Government to construct protective/safety walls or appropriate wildlife barriers on both sides of vulnerable stretches of the highway and to take other necessary measures to prevent wild animals from entering the roadway.

The organisation has also proposed the construction of wildlife underpasses/flyovers or suitable wildlife-crossing structures, wherever scientifically and technically appropriate, so that wild animals can safely cross the highway without coming into direct conflict with vehicles and human beings.

The GHYS stated that development and environmental protection must go hand in hand and that proper wildlife crossing infrastructure would help to protect both human lives and wildlife.

The GHYS Rongara Unit, hope that the Chief Minister and the Government of Meghalaya will give serious consideration to all four demands and initiate appropriate action in the larger public interest.

The organisation further stated that these demands are aimed at promoting economic development, accessible administration, transparency and accountability, and the protection of both human beings and wildlife in the Garo Hills region, said Barthazar G. Momin Secretary of GHYS Rongara Unit.
