Shillong, August 29, 2026: Despite inclement weather and heavy rain, people from all walks of life came together at the State Central Library Compound, Shillong, for the Silent Gathering for Peace, Unity and Harmony, organised by the Meghalaya Linguistic Minority Development Forum (MLMDF), on Friday.

Welcoming the gathering, MLMDF President Shri Sushit Kanti expressed deep sadness over the events that had recently gripped Shillong in darkness and pain.

He strongly condemned the desecration of the bust of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the attack on the legacy and statue of Swami Vivekananda, describing the incidents as condemnable, deeply painful and contrary to the spirit of Meghalaya.

He said that the gathering was meant to send a simple and powerful message: even through silence, we can achieve a lot. Silence, when expressed collectively with dignity and conviction, can become a powerful voice for peace, respect and unity.

Shri Sushit Kanti reiterated that Meghalaya is a peaceful land, full of love, harmony and possibilities, and that its people must not allow incidents of violence, hatred or disrespect to define the character of the state. He appealed to citizens from Meghalaya and across to stand together and protect the values of mutual respect, brotherhood and peaceful coexistence.

During the programme, MLMDF distributed a special pamphlet containing selected sayings and thoughts of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda, along with reflective notes emphasising unity, togetherness, courage and responsibility towards society.

The gathering was also graced by notes groups and personalities like Shri Sanbor Shullai, Minister, Government of Meghalaya, along with his team, and Shri Paul Lyngdoh, along with his team. Both Ministers appreciated the initiative and joined the event with happiness and hope seeing citizens join such an effort to remind people of shared culture, coexistence and togetherness.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by MLMDF President Shri Sushit Kanti, who thanked all participants, supporters and well-wishers for braving the heavy rain and standing together for the message of Peace Unity Harmony.

The Forum had extended its invitation openly to every section of society, irrespective of background, community or belief, and the response was witnessed through the resounding participation of citizens despite the adverse weather.
