Ampati, May 26, 2026: The International Day for Biological Diversity was observed on Thursday at Chiringpara Higher Secondary School (PM SHRI) under Betasing Block on the theme “Acting Locally for Global Impact.”

The programme was organized by the Social Forestry Range, Betasing in collaboration with the school authorities and local community members. Chiringpara Higher Secondary School has been selected under the centrally sponsored PM SHRI scheme of the Government of India aimed at upgrading and modernizing government schools across the country.

As part of the observance, drawing and painting competitions based on the theme were organized for students from Betasing Higher Secondary School, Emmanuel English School, and Chiring Higher Secondary School.

The programme was chaired by Smt. S.T.M. M. Sangma, Range Forest Officer (RFO), Betasing, while the welcome address was delivered by Shri Johny Miller D. Shira, Principal of Chiringpara Higher Secondary School.
Among those present during the programme were Smt. C.R.N.

Sangma, Block Development Officer, Betasing; Shri Mijendro B. Marak, Nokma and Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) member of Malchapara; and Shri Jackrobath B. Marak, Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC) member of Chondonpara.

During the programme, Smt. Lianchi Marak, Project Assistant from the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board, delivered a presentation on the functions and objectives of the Biodiversity Management Committee and highlighted the importance of community participation in biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management.

Speaking on the occasion, Smt. C.R.N. Sangma emphasized the importance of conserving Meghalaya’s rich biodiversity and stressed the need to preserve forests, wildlife, and natural ecosystems for future generations. She also spoke on the issue of plastic pollution and encouraged students and community members to adopt environmentally friendly practices.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of the drawing and painting competitions held during the programme.
The event concluded with active participation from students, teachers, village representatives, and Forest Department officials. A tree plantation drive was also carried out under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign.
