Shillong, May 25, 2026: In a major step for Meghalaya’s Indigenous Languages, Khasi and Garo have been included in the CBSE Scheme of Studies, enabling affiliated schools to offer them as optional third languages from the 2026-27 academic year.

As per updated list on the CBSE OASIS portal, Khasi features at serial number 46 and Garo at 47 under the board’s new three-language framework, designated R1-R2-R3, which will be implemented next year.

The move allows more than 100 CBSE-affiliated schools in Meghalaya to officially introduce Khasi or Garo as part of the third-language basket.

Updating the OASIS portal has been made mandatory for schools as part of the rollout of the language policy aligned with the National Education Policy and the National Curriculum Framework.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma thanked Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for his intervention in securing the inclusion of the two languages in the CBSE R3 framework.

“This important step will benefit students, ease challenges for schools, support language teachers, and strengthen the preservation of Meghalaya’s rich linguistic heritage,” Sangma said.

He added that the decision reflects a shared commitment to an inclusive education system that respects every linguistic identity.
