Williamnagar, Jan 13, 2026: The members of ‘The Garo Hills Youth Solidarity (GHYS)’ submited a memorandum to the District Administration (DA) to its kind attention to the growing concerns regarding the unchecked rise of non-tribal settlers in the district and its impact on the peace, security, and future of the indigenous tribal population.

There is increasing apprehension among indigenous communities that a significant number of non-tribal individuals are residing in the district without proper legal authorization. Allegations persist that some residents are unable to establish verifiable lineage or legal residency records of the Legacy of their parents and grandparents, raising serious questions about the legality of their settlement. The particular concern is the perceived rise in criminal activities and unlawful practices, which many locals associate with unauthorized settlements. Such developments threaten social harmony, strain administrative resources, and create fear and insecurity among indigenous communities, whose constitutional protections and customary rights must be preserved, said Endick Marak President of Garo Hills Youth Soliditary, HQ Simsanggre, in his released.

“We humbly request the district administration to Conduct a lawful and transparent verification drive to examine the residency status of non-tribal settlers in East Garo Hills, including scrutiny of valid documents establishing the legacy of their ancestry, domicile, and legal entry. Take action strictly in accordance with the Constitution of India and applicable laws. Initiate legal deportation or corrective measures, wherever unauthorized residency is established, ensuring due process and human rights safeguards. Strengthen monitoring mechanisms to prevent further illegal settlements and protect indigenous land, culture, and demographic balance” added Marak.

While “we acknowledge that delays in addressing this issue have complicated the situation, we firmly believe that timely and decisive lawful action can still safeguard the future, peace, and tranquility of the indigenous people of East Garo Hills. We trust in your leadership and administrative commitment to uphold justice, constitutional safeguards, and the long-term welfare of the district” he said.
