Tura, May 23, 2026: Reinforcing the Meghalaya Government’s focus on participatory and grassroots-led governance, Shri Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister, on Thursday held an extensive CM Connect interaction with residents of Tura while announcing a series of major urban infrastructure and public welfare projects for the region.
The interaction, held at the District Auditorium in Tura, witnessed citizens directly raising civic and developmental concerns before the Chief Minister, reflecting the Government’s continued emphasis on accessible governance and time-bound grievance redressal mechanisms.
On the same day, Sangma laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Nazing Bazar along with the old building, a new parking lot, hotel facility, multipurpose hall and area for vendors at Rs 60 .76 Crores have been sanctioned for which the foundation stone was laid today. He also initiated projects for a multi-level parking and cinema complex at Dakopgre, which will accommodate around 200 vehicles, and a food court, for which Rs 51. 42 crores have been sanctioned and the foundation stone was laid on Thursday. A comprehensive renovation of the Social Mobilization Experimentation & Learning Centre (SMELC) Complex is also being undertaken. About Rs 150 Crores development projects is being laid on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister informed that development projects worth nearly Rs 1,720 crore have been taken up in Tura over the past eight years. He announced that a dedicated CM Connect office has now been established at the PA Sangma Sports Complex, while similar CM Connect offices will also be set up across every block to strengthen local-level public engagement.
He further stated that the Government is planning additional urban and cultural infrastructure in Tura, including three cinema halls, a gaming zone, an Art and Culture Promenade with museum facilities, and an active ageing centre designed as a dedicated activity space for senior citizens. The Chief Minister also launched the Tura Smart Town Booklet during the programme.
HCM announced the locality-wise Street Light Project and distribution of sanction letter for CCTV in which sanctions for 1000 street lights and 300 CCTVs for localities have been earmarked.
In his speech, Conrad K Sangma said, “We all know the intention of CM Connect Program is to directly communicate with the CM or direct complain to the CM for different locality people, locality leaders. Governance is for the people. Governance is for the public. Anyone can call 1971 at any time and address their grievances. This is not an ordinary call centre.
This is also a complain registration system.”
He also gave a detailed presentation on several ongoing infrastructure and urban development projects in Tura, including the Tura Integrated Administrative Complex (Rs 165 crore), beautification of Tura Bazaar (Rs 16.27 crore), Working Women’s Hostel, redevelopment of Polo Orchid (Rs 145 crore), PA Sangma Sports Complex (Rs 127 crore), Pa Togan Nengminja Track & Field Stadium (Rs 60 crore), Convention Centre (Rs 61.83 crore), and the Pelga Tourist Circuits and Hospitality Complex (Rs 16.51 crore).
During the CM Connect interaction, residents from different localities raised issues relating to roads, civic amenities and water supply. Shri Nolingstone K. Marak from Reserve Gittim sought intervention regarding a retaining wall and a church approach road that, according to him, had remained unrepaired for nearly 15 years. Chief Minister assured that officials would engage with the local development committee and examine the matter.
Shri Varun Koch from Sepoy Colony highlighted poor road conditions in the area, to which the Chief Minister assured financial support for repairs. Shri Jettison G. Sangma from Modinagar raised concerns regarding narrow and steep access roads affecting households in the locality, and the Chief Minister directed officials to look into the issue.
Meanwhile, Shri Ediberth Sangma from Gongadamal raised concerns over inadequate water supply. Responding to the issue, officials informed that a new pipeline connection from the Circuit House Reserve Area is currently being undertaken and is expected to be completed within a month.
The Chief Minister also launched the Tura Municipal Board Mobile Application and announced locality-wise streetlight projects along with the distribution of sanction letters for CCTV installations.
Additionally, cheques worth Rs 25,000 each were distributed to 4 selected artists and 1 group under the Chief Minister’s Artists Engagement Scheme.
The CM Connect programme reflected the Government’s continued commitment towards direct citizen engagement and collaborative governance, while providing a platform for residents to openly discuss concerns related to civic infrastructure, urban services and community welfare with the Chief Minister.
