Resubelpara, March 20, 2026: The Office of the District Water and Sanitation Mission (DWSM), North Garo Hills, observed World Water Day at the Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society Hall, Mendipathar, today.

Shri Timothy D. Shira, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Tourism and Fisheries, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, he highlighted the critical importance of water not only for human consumption but also for agriculture and horticulture. He stressed the need for rejuvenation of water catchment areas and sources, along with the sustainable use of water resources for the benefit of all.

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini, who attended as the Guest of Honour, underscored that water is a precious resource. He noted that despite Meghalaya receiving abundant rainfall, the state continues to face water scarcity. He emphasized that effective water harvesting and rainwater management can significantly address this challenge.
He further stated that the programme aimed to bring together individuals and communities to recognize the importance of water conservation and promote its judicious use.

The programme also featured felicitation of outstanding performers in water supply management across the district. Awards were presented to the best-performing water supply schemes in rural areas, top Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs), five best women Field Test Kit (FTK) users, and the best volunteer for water supply management under Mendipathar, Bajengdoba, and Kharkutta Sub-Divisions.

The observance marked a collective effort to raise awareness on water conservation and encourage community participation in sustainable water management practices.
