Tura, March 20, 2026:
The International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 20, 2026, at the Rongram Horti Hub Training Hall, West Garo Hills, under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls.” The programme was organised by the District Social Welfare Officer, West Garo Hills, Tura, in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Tura.

The event witnessed participation from more than 200 women, along with officers from various departments, Lady Supervisors, Anganwadi workers, and members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) from different parts of the district.

Smt. Cherandha A. Sangma, Gender Specialist, DHEW, chaired the programme and welcomed the gathering.

Delivering the keynote address, Smt. Madonna Onasis T. Sangma, District Social Welfare Officer, Tura, highlighted that the celebration provided a platform to connect rural and urban communities while showcasing the talents and products of women SHG groups. She emphasized that such initiatives help strengthen the local economy. She also apprised the gathering of various government schemes and programmes aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of the people and urged women to actively avail these opportunities with determination and commitment towards building a poverty-free society through economic empowerment.

Stalls displaying a variety of products, including local spices, pickles, and agri-horticultural produce, were set up at the venue, attracting considerable attention.

A representative from the Superintendent of Police’s office, Smt. Jakre M. Sangma, WPSI, spoke on the importance of raising awareness about sexual harassment of women in workplaces and informed the gathering about the services provided by the One Stop Centre, Tura.

During the programme, women entrepreneurs shared their inspiring journeys from humble beginnings to becoming successful entrepreneurs, encouraging others to pursue self-reliance.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, Smt. Hemaritha Ch. Sangma, Vice Chairperson, Meghalaya State Commission for Women and Retired Additional Director of Social Welfare, reflected on the significance of womanhood and the vital role women play in shaping families and society. She expressed her satisfaction at the positive transformation in the lives of women in the region and expressed hope for continued progress and development.

The programme also featured a musical performance by Tura Music Academy.

On the occasion, the Chief Guest and other dignitaries felicitated several women entrepreneurs for their achievements. The awardees included:

The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Smt. Miami A. Sangma, Centre Administrator, One Stop Centre, Tura.
