Shillong, May 30, 2026: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday said his government has been working persistently to lift the coal mining ban and implement scientific mining practices.

Sangma was speaking at the foundation stone laying program for three major road projects in East Jaintia Hills district. The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to following legal and procedural requirements while supporting the mining sector.

On support for small miners and addressing the challenges they face, the Chief Minister said negotiations with the Government of India are ongoing to ensure sustainable mining practices. He emphasized the importance of balancing the needs of large and small miners to achieve long-term sustainability.

He also expressed hope for finding solutions that benefit both the mining sector and the environment.

Highlighting Meghalaya’s economic growth, Sangma noted that it is among the fastest-growing economies in the world and stressed that economic development is inclusive and benefits the entire state, not just specific regions or constituencies. He reiterated the government’s commitment to all-round development and the importance of such projects.

While acknowledging the challenges and criticism that come with economic progress, he emphasized the government’s efforts to address these challenges and find solutions that benefit the people.
