Sohra, July 27, 2026: Meghalaya solemnly observed Kargil Vijay Diwas to honour the extraordinary courage, patriotism, and supreme sacrifice of the brave soldiers who defended the nation’s sovereignty during the 1999 Kargil War.

The programme began with a special tribute to Captain Keishing Clifford Nongrum, Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous), Meghalaya’s own heroic son whose unmatched bravery continues to inspire generations.

The event commenced with members remembering Captain Nongrum’s exceptional courage during the Battle of Kargil. As a young officer of the 12 Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry, Captain Nongrum displayed remarkable leadership and determination while leading a daring assault on a heavily fortified enemy position. Despite sustaining injuries during the fierce battle, he continued advancing towards the objective, eliminating enemy soldiers before making the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation. His fearless actions played a decisive role in the capture of the strategic peak and earned him the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest wartime gallantry award.

Following the tribute, members lit candles as a symbol of eternal remembrance and gratitude for the brave hearts who laid down their lives for the country. Floral tributes were then offered before the portraits of the gallant warriors as a mark of deep respect and reverence.

The programme also remembered several other legendary heroes of the Kargil War, including Captain Vikram Batra (PVC), Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey (PVC), Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav (PVC), Captain Anuj Nayyar (MVC), and Captain Neikezhakuo Kengurüse (MVC). Participants reflected on their extraordinary acts of courage and unwavering commitment to the nation.

During the interactive session, members discussed Captain Keishing Clifford Nongrum’s life, military journey, discipline, leadership, humility, and indomitable spirit. His inspiring habits, dedication to duty, love for the nation, and willingness to place the country above self were highlighted as enduring ideals for the youth. Similar discussions were held on the lives, valour, and sacrifices of the other Kargil heroes, emphasizing that their legacy continues to strengthen the spirit of national service and patriotism.

Speaking on the occasion, members of Think India NIT Meghalaya stated that Kargil Vijay Diwas is not merely a remembrance of military victory but a reaffirmation of the values of courage, selfless service, unity, and devotion to the nation.

The programme concluded with a collective pledge to uphold these ideals and ensure that the sacrifices of India’s brave soldiers remain an everlasting source of inspiration for future generations.
