Power Minister AT Mondal visits Ganol Dam and Power House accumulation of garbage in the Ganol basin

Tura, May 28,2025: Power Minister A.T. Mondal on Tuesday visited the Ganol Dam and Power house to assess the situation following the accumulation of garbage in the Ganol basin, caused by heavy rainfall in the region.

Mondal explained that the debris was largely made up of garbage washed in from upstream markets, picnic spots, commercial establishments, as well as natural forest waste such as tree branches and bamboo. “Due to heavy rain, runoff water carried all these to the dam site,” he said during the inspection.

He informed that most of the garbage at the intake point has already been cleared, and workers are actively engaged in removing the remaining debris to ensure smooth functioning of the facility.

The Minister also stated that the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills has initiated prompt action. Line department officials are coordinating with relevant stakeholders, including local committees, to prevent future dumping of waste in upstream areas and markets.

Notably, Mondal had recently briefed media personnel on the recurring nature of the issue, attributing it to poor waste management in nearby markets and homestays. He stressed the importance of raising awareness in upstream communities and mentioned that long-term preventive measures are currently being discussed with the Chief Minister to ensure the problem does not persist.
