Workshop on Green Verdict held at Tura
Tura, May 6, 2025: With a view to enlighten the public on Environment Laws and Judgement, a Workshop on Green Verdict: Comprehensive Digest of Recent Environment Law Cases was held today at the Conference Hall, District Session Court Complex, West Garo Hills, Tura. The Workshop was organised by District Legal Services Authority, Tura in collaboration with Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority under the aegis National Legal Services Authority.
During the workshop, the Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel, Tura Jericho R Marak informed that Green Verdict refers to a judicial decision particularly by the Supreme Court or the National Green Tribunal (NGT) which relates to environment issues or environment protection. Mentioning that Green verdicts recognise the legal rights of the environment also ensuring to address environment degradation, he said that it is crucial for enforcing environment laws and regulations and that any establishment or individuals are held accountable for their actions that harm the environment.
Sharing some judgements and court cases from those involved in polluting the land and resource management, he said that most of the judgements compel the polluters to compensate affected communities and active restoration measures.
