Bharat Ko Jano- a Cultural programme held in Tura

Tura, March 15, 2025: The Rich Cultural diversity of India was presented today at a cultural programme held at District Auditorium, Tura. The programme “Bharat Ko Jano” or Know India Initiative aims to promote understanding, appreciation and uniqueness of the diverse cultural heritage of India. The programme was organised by North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Dimapur under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India in collaboration with the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Meghalaya.

During the programme, artists from Chhattisgarh, Nagaland, Assam and local artists from Meghalaya enthralled the gathering with their vibrant and mesmerising traditional folk dances. Vibrant Bihu Dance from Assam, folk dance from Chhattisgarh, Sumi dance from Nagaland, Bengali, Nepali and traditional Wangala dance from Meghalaya, etc were performed by the artists.

Addressing the gathering, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Jengjal Civil Sub-Division Manish Kumar said that this programme is organised so that people can visualise what our nation is as well as to respect and celebrate the rich cultural integrity of India. Stating that India is a land of unity in diversity, he said that such programmes uphold the distinct identity of the country and showcase the cultural integrity of the nation. He also advised the participants to interact, share their experiences and understand the cultural practices of different regions of the country and visualise the diversity of the country.

He further highlighted the unique matrilineal system of the Garo Society and added that the forces of urbanisation have not been diluted and still in practice amongst the people of the region. Stating that cleanliness is at the highest level and no garbage is strewn around in rural areas, he expressed his gratitude to the people of the region for maintaining the places clean and urge them to continue this practice in future.

Speaking on the occasion as Guest of Honour, Dr. Crystal Cornelius D Marak, Assistant Professor, Department of Garo NEHU, Tura Campus and General Council Member, Sahitya Academy, New Delhi, Ministry of Culture, Government of India said that this kind of performance foster knowledge and awareness about the cultural and folk dance of different regions of the country which reminds us that culture is our identity and the performance of the artist is not just a mere entertainment but these traditions are passed on to generations through these art and tradition.

Deputy Director, NEZCC Dimapur Oliver T Pongen highlighted that the objective of this Bharat Ko Jano cultural programme is to celebrate and promote the rich and diverse culture and heritage of the nation. Moreover, the event aims to deepen the understanding of cultural wealth of different regions of the country and foster a sense of national pride amongst all generations especially the youth.

Earlier, the Chief Guest and other dignitaries lighted the ceremonial lamp. Officers of West Garo Hills District, Academicians, students, teachers were among others who attended the programme.
