Tura, Nov 26, 2025: The A.H. & Veterinary Department, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the West Garo Hills District Cooperative Milk Union Ltd. (TMUL), today observed National Milk Day 2025 at the New Dairy Complex, Ganol, Tura. The programme witnessed the participation of dairy farmers, cooperative members, officials, students and local residents, and commemorated the vital role of the dairy sector in the region.
The celebration was graced by the Chief Guest, Dr. Arpilla M. Momin, Joint Director, AH & Veterinary Departmen, Garo Hills Region, who inaugurated the programme and interacted with dairy farmers and stakeholders. In her address, she highlighted the historic contributions of Dr. Verghese Kurien, the “Milk Man of India,” and other visionaries who contributed towards making India one of the largest milk-producing nations. She also briefed attendees on various government schemes available for dairy farmers, encouraging them to avail the benefits to enhance productivity and economic growth. She further stressed the importance of livestock vaccination, proper management and animal welfare to ensure improved milk yield.
The programme commenced with an invocation prayer by Shri Charbilline Sangma, Chairman, TMUL, followed by a welcome speech by Mr. Balrang A. Sangma, Dairy Officer, Tura. A welcome song was presented by the staff of the Senior Dairy Office, Tura.
Delivering the keynote address, Smt. Wilda Ch. Marak, Assistant Director-cum-Managing Director, TMUL, reflected on the legacy of Dr. Kurien and outlined initiatives undertaken to strengthen cooperative development and dairy-based livelihoods in West Garo Hills.
A presentation titled Duran’ Jama was made by TMUL, highlighting the Union’s ongoing efforts in dairy development. A skit performance by competition winners added a cultural dimension to the event. A motivational message was delivered by Kum. Phindarihun K. Dhar, Senior Dairy Officer, Tura, who also highlighted the achievements of outstanding dairy farmers.
As part of the celebration, awards were presented by the Chief Guest. Bablu Sangma received recognition for producing the maximum quantity of milk, while Kalnath Ch. Marak was awarded for producing the best quality milk. Winners of sports activities conducted earlier under the National Milk Day initiative were also felicitated with trophies, certificates and cash prizes.
A symbolic toast with a glass of milk marked the formal observance of National Milk Day, followed by the ceremonial opening of food stalls featuring milk-based products prepared by local entrepreneurs.
The programme also featured a Best Stall for Dairy Product Contest, food stalls and a live musical performance by Mr. Silberth Sangma, which drew positive public participation.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Rongrikku G. Momin, Assistant Manager, TMUL, expressing appreciation to all officials, participants and stakeholders for their support in making the celebration successful.
