Tura, Mar 9, 2025: The third (3rd) public meeting of the A·chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) aimed at advocating for the long-cherished demand for the establishment of a Winter Capital in Tura was held on March 8, 2025, at Baghmara in South Garo Hills.
In accordance with the previously announced schedule, the ASPF facilitated this Public Awareness Meeting in Baghmara, focusing on the significance of Winter Capital, the rights of the populace to have it established in Tura, and the associated benefits. The meeting aimed to mobilize public support and exert pressure on the government to prioritize this issue without delay. The attendees included community leaders, Nokma, representatives from NGOs, social activists and senior citizens.
Greneth Sangma Social Activist, articulated that the establishment of Winter Capital in Tura is a fundamental right. He expressed concern regarding the neglect of this right by the Meghalaya Government for over fifty (50) years, despite the commitments made by the State’s Founders and Forefathers.
Bernita Marak, General Secretary of ASPF, expressed her appreciation to the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, for the formation of a committee to examine the potential establishment of Winter Capital in Tura. She also acknowledged Dr. Mukul Sangma, Leader of Opposition (LO), for introducing a Historic Resolution in the Assembly supporting this initiative. Marak urged all representatives from the Garo community to maintain unity in the pursuit of the long-awaited aspirations of the Garo Hills Region.
Balkarin Ch Marak Acting Chairman of the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) CEC HQ, Tura expressed appreciation to all participants for their engagement in the meeting. He highlighted the community’s responsibility to advocate for what has been agreed upon by their forefathers regarding the Winter Capital. Marak urged the public to increase their involvement in this movement until their objectives are realized and concluded the meeting with heartfelt thanks to all attendees.
