Tura, December 2: The third edition of the Me·gong International Literary Festival commenced on Wednesday at DC. Park, Tura. The two-day literary celebration is organised by the Department of Garo, NEHU Tura Campus in collaboration with the A·chik Literature Society (ALS), Captain Williamson Sangma State University and Don Bosco College.

Celebrated under the theme “Cha·chriko rongrikangbo, Rongjanggiko rongsikangbo”
(Preserving the roots, envisioning the future), the festival aims to honour the rich cultural legacy of the A·chik community while embracing new directions in contemporary literature and creative expression.

The inaugural programme was graced by Sanjay A. Sangma, MLA of Mahendraganj Constituency and Adviser to the Department of Excise, Government of Meghalaya, as the Chief Guest. In his address, he highlighted the importance of preserving and continuing A·chik culture and traditions through literature, stating that language is an essential link that connects people to their identity and heritage.

He strongly encouraged authors and budding writers to increase publication efforts, noting that only 22 languages are currently recognized under the 8th Schedule of the Constitution. He emphasized that strengthening literary contributions is vital for achieving greater recognition for the A·chik language at the national level.

Sangma further envisioned that future editions of the festival should be scaled up into grander international platforms involving renowned international, national, and local authors, creating an environment for mutual learning, exchange of perspectives, and broader literary dialogue.

Recalling a memorable moment involving late P.A. Sangma during a cultural event in Bangladesh, the Chief Guest shared how Garo performers initially appeared in attire similar to the local community rather than their own traditional clothing. Guided by P.A. Sangma to value and uphold their authentic cultural identity, the performers later showcased true Garo attire at subsequent events—a reflection of the ongoing effort to protect and preserve cultural uniqueness while engaging globally.

Sangma also expressed deep appreciation to A·chik authors, scholars, and contributors who have played pivotal roles in uplifting the language, literature, and cultural prominence of the community.

During the ceremony, the A·chik Literature Society (ALS) presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Dr. Titthue Cheran Momin for securing International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN) for all future A·chik/Garo publications-a milestone accomplished in April 2024 that enables A·chik literature to be systematically catalogued, distributed, and recognized on international platforms.

The festival also witnessed the felicitation of three eminent scholars-Prof. Milton S. Sangma, Prof. Caroline R. Marak, and Prof. Fameline K. Marak, for their outstanding contributions to A·chik literature, culture, and academia.

Several major publications are set to be released as part of the festival showcase, including:

Ku·riping I and Birong Sika by Dr. Dorothy R. Marak

Chokchimsa Bite by Changchang M. Sangma

Nikchanga by Sengsime A. Sangma

Official documentation of Me·gong International Literary Festival (Edition II) by the Department of Garo. The opening day featured engaging discussions including a literary conversation between Dr. Colnat B. Marak and Prof. Caroline R. Marak, an Oral Renditions Session chaired by Melkior Chisim featuring renowned folk artists Paljen T. Sangma, Nikjrang Ch. Marak, and Preman Ch. Marak, along with seminars involving emerging writers and scholars.

The inaugural day concluded with much enthusiasm, setting a vibrant tone for more insightful sessions and cultural presentations as the festival continues on Thursday, December 4.
