World No Tobacco Day Observed at Birin Nuchong Secondary School, South West Garo Hills
Ampati, May 30, 2025: Birin Nuchong Secondary School in Ampati, South West Garo Hills observed, World No Tobacco Day on Thursday with the theme “Exposing Lies, Protecting Lives: Unmask the Appeal of Tobacco and Nicotine Products”. The event aimed to raise awareness about the deceptive tactics used by the tobacco industry and to promote healthy, tobacco-free lifestyles among the youth.
Organised in collaboration with the Health Department of South West Garo Hills, the day featured a series of engaging and educational activities, including dental and oral screening, quiz competitions on tobacco awareness, balloon bursting, painting and slogan writing contests, and a 100-meter race. Winners of the competitions were awarded prizes in recognition of their participation and efforts.
Tapos Marak, SEO of South West Garo Hills graced the event as the Chief Guest and urged students and faculty to abide by the COTPA Act, particularly Section 6(a) and 6(b), which prohibit the sale of tobacco products to minors and near educational institutions. He reinforced the need for consistent awareness and community participation to protect the younger generation.
Dr. Cornelius R Marak delivered the keynote address, focusing on the COTPA Act and highlighting the importance of unmasking the tobacco industry’s marketing tactics. He elaborated on the ill effects of tobacco and nicotine products, especially on youth, and urged everyone to remain vigilant against misleading advertisements.
The event concluded with the prize distribution ceremony. The observance successfully instilled a sense of responsibility and awareness among students, serving as a crucial step toward building a tobacco-free future.
