Training Program for Nokmas held at Dalu, West Garo Hills
Tura June 12: A training programme on Mediation for Nokmas was held today at Dalu West Garo Hills.
The programme was organised by the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority in collaboration with the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, New Delhi and the District Legal Services Authority, West Garo Hills.
The training programme is part of the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India funded Project – ‘Increasing Access to Justice through Community Mediation’.
The main objective of the programme is to train and sensitise the Nokmas and headmen on community Mediation and to sensitise on local customs and usages, so as to enable them to resolve disputes at the grassroots level. It emphasises preserving indigenous culture, reducing court burdens, imparting legal knowledge, promoting justice and strengthening governance and administration of justice in Meghalaya.
The training programmes comprises theoretical and practical sessions and mock mediation. The training has been scheduled to cover 11 C&RD Blocks in the two chosen Districts of West Garo Hills and Ri-Bhoi.
