South Garo Hills Flood Relief Efforts

Baghmara, Oct 6,2024: Severe rainfall on October 4, has caused catastrophic damage in South Garo Hills, particularly in Chokpot constituency, where landslides and floods have ravaged communities, leaving many without shelter.

The over flowing Dareng River has inundated numerous residences, with approximately 16 homes in Chokpot area severely affected inform Garo Students’ Union (GSU) Chokpot Regional Unit.

The reports from Silki and Rambragre indicate that up to 30 residents have suffered due to the floods, but communication challenges due to network and road disruptions have hindered further assessment said GSU President Jish A.Sangma.

In response, a joint team comprising the GSU Chokpot Regional Unit, Sengchim N. Sangma MLA Chokpot, BDO JN Sangma and Police Officials, conducted a relief operation on October 5 and distributing essential supplies to affected victims. Unfortunately, inaccessible roads hindered the team’s ability to reach all affected areas.

“We urge your support in publicizing the plight of affected communities and the ongoing relief efforts” added GSU President.
