NGO demands implementation of Greater Water Scheme in Chokpot

Baghmara, Feb 26,2025: The Chokpot NGOs, comprising the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) Chokpot Regional Unit and Chokpot Area Vigilance Committee (CAVC), alongwith A·king Nokmas and the residents of Chokpot area, on Wednesday submitted a letter to the SDO PHE, Chokpot Sub Division, South Garo Hills, in demanding the Greater Water Supply Scheme, regarding the water crisis in Chokpot area.

Recently, “we met the Sub-Divisional Officer in-charge of PHE, at Chokpot Office and discussed the Greater Water Supply Scheme. The SDO of PHE, assured that his commitment to expediting the implementation of the water supply scheme and promised to initiate work at the earliest” said NGOs.

Despite having a functional, PHE Office in Chokpot, but the people of Chokpot area has not been received reliable water supply from the PHE department for over two decades, have been solely dependent on the Dareng River, added NGOs.

Moreover, the Greater Water Supply Scheme, sanctioned in 2022, has not been shown significant progress in the Chokpot area. “We urged the Meghalaya government to intervene and expedite the implementation of the scheme” said Jesswell Ch.Marak Chairman of CAVC.
