Celebration of International Day for Older Persons at Asanang
Tura, November 25, 2024: The International Day for Older Persons was celebrated at Multi Facility Centre, Rongram C & RD Block, Asanang on 25th November, 2024. The programme was organized by the Department of Social Welfare, West Garo Hills Tura with the theme “Ageing with Dignity: The importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide”.
Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest the Block Development Officer, Rongram C & RD Block Cherime R Sangma mentioned that the day is celebrated to recognize the contributions of older people and to raise awareness about the opportunities and challenges with ageing population and to mobilise families, community groups and stakeholders to address the difficulties faced by older people. She also mentioned that when a person attains 60 years they are not entitled for Job Cards and Old Age Pension Scheme is being provided to them so that they can rest and avail this pension scheme.
Further, she urged all the elderly citizens to avail whatever schemes, financial and medical facilities provided by the government for their own benefit.
The District Social Welfare Officer, West Garo Hills Tura Madonna T Sangma informed about various schemes and facilities provided by the Government such as Old Age Pension Scheme for 60 years and above and added that many do not avail this benefit in Garo Hills.
Further, the Representative from District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Tura informed about the legal services provided to the beneficiaries while representative from Medical department highlighted the medical facilities provided by the Government free of cost for elderly persons like free screening of non- communicable diseases for diabetes, hypertension, cancer, etc and other diseases so that they stay fit and healthy always.
The Chief Guest distributed gifts to the Elderly Persons and Free Screening and Health Check-up was also organized for Senior citizens during the function.
