Dr. Mukul Sangma inspects Demolish site of Cenotaph and demand for respect public sentiments

Tura, Mar 22, 2025: The Leader of Opposition (LO) Dr. Mukul M. Sangma, along with Williamnagar MDC Alphonsius Sangma, Kharkutta MDC Cherak W. Momin, Damas MDC Parninand D. Shira and senior party workers of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), visited the site of the demolished cenotaph in Lower Babupara, Tura.

Their visit was followed by a crucial meeting at the DRDA Conference Hall Tura, where discussions were held with the Deputy Commissioner (DC), representatives of the Mothers’ Union, Civil Society Organizations, and other stakeholders.

During the meeting, Dr. Sangma emphasized the need for inclusive decision-making and expressed deep concerns over the removal of the cenotaph without consulting the citizens. He highlighted that the intervention of government schemes must be conducted with transparency and public consensus, particularly when historical landmarks are involved.

“This particular issue is highly sensitive and it is definitely a matter that must be taken very seriously by the Concerned Authorities. The wrong that has been done must be corrected. It is necessary to take everybody on board before making any decision and anything that is considered inappropriate must be rectified,” said Dr. Sangma. He reiterated that governance must be responsive to public sentiment and course corrections should be made when actions are perceived as wrong by the people.

The Mothers’ Union, represented by Senior Educationist and Executive Member strongly condemned the removal of the Cenotaph and its plaque. “We are quite disappointed to see how the plaque and remains of the Monument have been torn apart and removed from their original place. We were told that a parking lot is being planned at the site, with a monument placed on the terrace. We vehemently objected to this because that is not how you honor the memory of those who gave their lives for the country,” she said.

She further insisted that any new structure must be built at ground level, in a clean and respectable space where, it can be seen and appreciated by all. “This must not be about modern infrastructure alone but about respecting history and sentiments. We demand that any decision taken by the government and Municipal Administration reflect the will and interests of the people of Garo Hills,” she added.

The discussions concluded with a strong call for the restoration of historical dignity and ensuring that all future interventions take into account the sentiments of the public. Civil Society Organizations, Local Leaders and the opposition collectively stressed that governance must be people-centric and decisions impacting cultural heritage should not be taken arbitrarily.
