District Selection Chess Tournament Successfully Concludes in South West Garo Hills
Ampati, May 24, 2025: The South West Garo Hills District Chess Association successfully concluded its two-day District Selection Chess Tournament on Saturday, marking a significant step in promoting intellectual sports in the region. Held at Taktaki SSA Upper Primary School, Ampati, the tournament brought together around 60 enthusiastic players from across the district, competing for a chance to represent South West Garo Hills at the upcoming State-Level FIDE-rated tournament in Shillong.
The championship was officially inaugurated by Additional Deputy Commissioner Dolrich B. G Momin, who attended as Chief Guest. In his opening remarks, ADC Momin congratulated the District Chess Association for its initiative and expressed strong support for future tournaments, emphasizing chess as a valuable tool for mental development and personal growth. “Chess not only sharpens memory but also fosters lifelong learning. I believe it can open doors for our youth, both intellectually and professionally,” he said, also sharing his own passion for the game and role as an advisor to the Association.
The closing ceremony was graced by Sanjay Koch, MDC of Betasing constituency, who praised the young participants and extended his gratitude to the organizers. “Seeing such passion for chess among the youth is truly inspiring. This tournament reflects a positive shift toward intellectual engagement in our district,” he said.
After a series of intense and skillful matches over the two days, 6 players were selected to represent the district in the upcoming State-level tournament. The final standings are as follows:
